The political system in the US can be a little too complicated for some people to be able to swallow. For one thing, the president of the US is not chosen by popular vote, rather he needs to receive a majority of the electoral votes in the electoral college. Each state gets a certain number of electoral votes and this is calculated by adding the number of senators, which is always two, to the number of representatives that the state has in the US lower house of congress.
For Texas, this number comes to around 38. That’s because the state has two senators, just live every other state, and around 36 representatives in the US House of Representatives. The number of representatives is based on how many people are living in the state, and Texas has been seeing an increase in this number over the years which is also influenced by a Supreme Court ruling that has helped shape the way that the electorate looks. This might seem like a confusing system, but it’s one that works quite a bit.
In spite of the fact that this is the case, it is important to note that the system is based on practices that are quite old. Some people are calling for a change to this system, whereas others seem to think that it is working just fine and that absolutely no changes are ever going to be required at all. Whatever the case may be, if you want to become president of the US you need to focus on winning lots of states instead of focusing on those states that have the most people residing inside of them.
